30 Days of Thanks: Patience

Today started out exactly the way it ended, with meltdowns and tears over something seemingly pointless to an adult and yet very, very important in Nora’s three year old world.  Like having leftover cranberry sauce cooked into her oatmeal after she said, “Yes, I want cranberry sauce in my oatmeal” or the fact that the blanket on her bed was “too soft.”  Between breakfast and bedtime, there were lots of other occasions for tears, which led to plenty of moments when I wanted to just stop being a mama and walk away.  I can’t count the number of times I told Nora I was going to count to X before Y had to happen or…and in most of those moments, the counting was really for me.

A long time ago, I realized that one of my biggest parenting challenges was going to be practicing patience — I even made it one of my Housewife Challenges.  I knew that since I grew up in a house with a lot of raised voices and physical punishment, I am more likely to resort to similar parenting in stressful situations, and I am definitely someone who is more easily stressed out than some.  I vowed that I would parent differently, but there are still plenty of days when I understand the desire to scream at one’s children or to want to lock them in their room and go eat an entire pint of Ben & Jerry’s chocolate fudge brownie while they cry it out alone on the floor.  And despite my best efforts to remind myself that Nora is still so very little, I also completely understand the wish for a child to act like a miniature adult in certain situations.

Today turned out to be one of those days with a few really great moments completely surrounded by some very, very trying moments.  Overall, I think I managed alright even when I felt frustrated, and I am thankful that I was able to stay patient on the outside even when I didn’t feel so patient on the inside.

Allll right Amber!!! Patience is the key… The cooking directive and change of heart happens when they’re grown too!

Awww….Nora is so beautiful and cure even during her meltdown moments ๐Ÿ™‚ Do not worry, this stage will pass very soon and I’m saying this as a mother of a ten year old.
I have one question for you Amber. Where do you buy Nora’s outfits? They are all so pretty.

Thanks, Anu. I keep reminding myself everything is a phase — and a short one in the grand scheme of things.

We have been very lucky so far and have actually bought very, very little for Nora. My mom is excited to have a little girl to buy for after years of buying clothes for all my younger brothers and has largely clothed Nora for us. Most of what she buys is from Gymboree. We also have gotten lucky and got a ton of hand-me-downs from friends, most of which are Old Navy. And a few of the things she wears I made for her.

It's that time again... Girl Scout cookies! And this year we have two selling. Help them meet their cookies sales goals by ordering online.

If you live nearby, choose girl delivery and help get cookie boxes out of our garage... Otherwise we're going to be giving them Girl Scout Cookies for birthday and Christmas presents all year.

Bus stop selfie with Nora. This week she moved from her tiny charter school with only 18 eighth graders to the public middle school with over 200. And now she rides the bus.

The charter school wasn't challenging her enough, has a huge percentage of students who are disruptive in the classroom, and has been having trouble keeping teachers. Last year she loved it. But this year it was one thing after another, so right before Thanksgiving she and I went to go tour our neighborhood middle school, and she immediately wanted to make the switch.

We've never had a kid in public school and I was nervous about how the transition would go from such a small school to a big one, but so far she's loving it and is glad she decided to move schools. It helps that she knows kids there already from her dance team. Hopefully she'll still be happy when she starts getting homework. Coming from a no homework school that may be a shock to us all.

Halloween 2022. Two witches, a murderous cat, and a creepy Victorian doll.

Zara's costume was my favorite this year - Nora did her makeup and she wore my flower girl dress from my mom and step-dad's wedding. She might have worn it better. ๐Ÿ˜‚
