Toddling into Fall

When October showed up last week, I was still in denial about fall.  It had been sunny and warm here (mid-70’s) and though the weather man threatened rain all last week, none showed up.  It was a wonderful Indian summer.  Now, I love fall, but I was enjoying September so much, with its lack of tourists but plenty of sunshine,  I wasn’t ready to for it to end.  And I certainly wasn’t ready for fall, because I felt like something was missing.

Canning.  For the past three years, I’ve been canning every summer: tomatoes whole, puree & sauce, jalapenos, peaches, candied apples & apple sauce, cherries (pie filling, spiced, and pickled), dill and bread & butter pickles, and always a batch or two of jam or jelly.  This summer, there wasn’t any surplus from our new CSA (we won’t be using them next year) and no wonderful pick-your-owns like in the Hudson Valley, so I didn’t get to put anything up.  It’s just not summer until I preserve something, so I was dragging my feet on fall.  But, in the last two days that was remedied.

First, Nora and I discovered that Bartlett’s has one afternoon of pick-your-own tomatoes for a dollar per pound, to clear their fields before fall.  You better believe we were waiting at the field gate Saturday afternoon when it opened at 1:00.  Field-fresh heirloom tomatoes for $1…it doesn’t get any better than that.  I had hoped to pick 20 lbs, but Nora was getting fussy so we left with just a little over 10.

But 10 lbs will keep us away from aluminum for a couple months – we have 10 pints crushed (three yellow, seven red) and a gallon frozen.

Mmmm.

Then, last night after she went to bed, I finally found time to make jelly with the grape juice I’d been saving from when she and I picked all the Concords.  Normally, I steer clear of grape jelly – it’s just so blah and reminds me of being a kid eating the most sugary sandwiches ever (empty HFCS white bread, peanut butter mixed with hydrogenated oil and more sugar, and of course jelly, which is more sugar than fruit – yes, this did take 7 cups of sugar).  However, we only have one jar of peach jam left in the pantry and I wasn’t going to Stop & Shop to buy fruit for jam when I had these amazingly tart and flavorful Nantucket grapes, so I thought I might as well try it.  Um…I am now a grape jelly convert.

It was good smeared on the biscuits I made for breakfast this morning…but it was actually good enough to eat by the spoonful.  And I’m thinking about the Nantucket grape jelly gems that will be in our future.  Don’t judge me.

After picking tomatoes and canning and jelly making, I finally felt ready to welcome fall.  Which was just as well, because last night, fall arrived.  With wind and rain and weather cool enough to warrant a sweatshirt.

Gray weather wasn’t getting to us, though, because today was Dada’s day off and it was so perfect.  Nora let us sleep in until 8:30 and then was in the best mood.  We had a delicious breakfast (with jelly!) that Chris and I cooked together and we cleaned together.  Oh, how I love a man who does the dishes…and then takes it upon himself to pick up all the baby’s toys.  We got some alone time while Nora took a long nap, and then she and I showed Dada the ECC. Chris finally got his driver’s license so he’s an official Nantucketer (yes, he is a bit of a slacker about these things).  Then we collaborated on dinner:

Pizza Margarita with Bartlett’s tomatoes.  (I made the dough, Chris did everything else.)  It was so good I forgot to take a picture before we dug in.

After dinner, Chris took command of baby bathtime while I cleaned and then we just hung out in the (clean!) living room, playing together, as a family.  Is this what it’s like to have a husband at home in the evenings?  Because it’s fabulous, and it’s another wonderful thing about fall — Chris is going to be home Wednesdays in time for dinner, too.

And then this day got even better: Nora took her first steps.

Do we have the most perfect baby or what?  If she was waiting for the best moment, when both of her parents were present, she couldn’t have picked a better one.

Yes, I may have been dragging my feet on fall, but not any more.

Now I bet it only took five minutes to pick ten lbs. Fussy baby? I’ll have nightmares dreaming of all those toms. wasting on the ground. The pic doesn’t show many people taking advantage.

Haha. It took a little longer than that. Quite a few of them were rotten on the vines, sadly. Also, she was in the Becco, so it makes it hard when she doesn’t want to be there.

Zara made a #texassnowman - tiny, full of grass and leaves, but a legit snowman. 😂 We have the fastest snowflakes I've ever seen falling down here right now and could get up to 4 inches! The girls are over the moon.

We found a mountain in Texas! Chris gave me a hiking trip to @enchantedrockstatenaturalarea for Christmas ( ♥️ experiences not things) and today I "cashed in" on my gift. We packed lunches, bundled up and drove about 1.5 hours, then spent the day hiking all around the mountain, through boulders, and up to the top.

We ended up hiking about 9 miles and everyone had a great time. Chris gets a medal for hiking at least half of it with Addie on his back, but she walked a few really good stretches too. She did great until she fell into a prickly pear. 😫 Luckily that was at the end of the day. Here's a few shots from the day - I even managed to get is all into a selfie, though with 6 people it seems like we're just about in selfie-stick territory...

Our 1,000 piece project and today the girlie on the right turned 8.

I was in and out of calls all day so was more than a little shocked by the ridiculousness in the Capitol when I finally saw the news at 4:55 pm. Sometimes life feels so surreal. It was a normal work day and it also wasn't a normal day at all. There was... an attempted coup? Out of control protests? Whatever we call it, at the least, it was a day that is likely to have long-lasting reverberations in our society (maybe not all positive) but it was also day of celebration and joy. Not just for our birthday girl but also for a friend and a cousin who both had babies today too.

It's hard to know how all these pieces fit together and what to make of life right now. Every day feels a bit like a roller coaster. It's crazy but I guess we just have to try to enjoy the ride and trust that eventually we'll be able to see the whole picture.

I can post a #Christmas picture the day after New Years, right? Because that's totally where I am right now. Months behind on the socials from my work hard/play hard life during which I was either glued to my computer working to launch our new plugin or being a total luddite ignoring my phone. I barely even took pictures of the kids. 😮

So this is pretty much it from our Christmas and New Year's celebrations which were perfectly lovely, and now it's 2021! I'm proud of how much we managed to hold it all together through 2020 and I hope to someday say more about that when I don't feel like I'm being pulled in 50 different directions by kids and trying to keep a business afloat. Here's to a new year...hopefully better than the last.

Happy first birthday to my little Vivienne. There was no themed birthday party considering the times we're in, but that's alright. Probably, if we're being honest, for a baby, that's preferable. No weird things messing up her routine, just a nice day at home with the family, fun crawling around outside in the leaves, and then pumpkin cake after dinner.

At one, Vivi is such an incredible delight. She laughs so much more than any of the other girls did as babies - she'll even start laughing if she just hears the word "funny." She keeps us all smiling all day long. She's pulling herself up on things, but isn't doing too much stepping yet, so I expect we're going to have another late walker. She knows a handful of words, loves to quack at ducks and neigh at horses, crawls all around the house finding things to get into, dances when she hears music, and loves pretty much all food (making up for her early days). I think she looks like Zara.

It's been a whirlwind year, but I most certainly could not have asked for a better tiny human to share 2020 with or to be part of our family. ♥️
