Countdown to One

It’s September.  Fall is just around the corner and Nora’s first birthday is in 5 days!

Not that she has any idea…

I’m still a little bit in disbelief, but mostly I’m incredibly excited for her birthday and her party, for which we are in full preparation mode.  It’s on the 5th, which is 4 days away, but it’s a brunch — at 10 am — so we really need to have everything ready the night before…which is 3 days away.  Friday and Saturday are going to be busy, busy, because Chris will be working both days and Mr. V will be here both days.  (Gulp.  I hope I can pull this off…)

Luckily, my dad is flying in for a visit Friday night, so I’ll have some reinforcements.  We’re happy he’s going to be here for Nora’s first and it will be great for him to see her, considering the last time he saw her she was barely a person.

I’m in good shape so far.  All the decorations are waiting to be hung.

You’ll have to wait until her birthday for a full view of the custom-made bunting, but everything matches and is in theme!

There’s a mega-cute birthday girl outfit ready to be worn.

I’ve gotten a little better at making hats since her half birthday party…

Her birthday presents are wrapped, but out of sight.

Normally my wrapping skills far exceed this, but these are big and oddly shaped, so I did what I could!

The menu is planned:

  • Tomato and Goat Cheese Crepes
  • Cheese Strata
  • Crispy Roasted Potatoes and Wilted Greens
  • Applesauce Spice Cake

It’s pulling it off without our chef that makes me just a tiny bit nervous.  Keep your fingers crossed and stay tuned.

It's that time again... Girl Scout cookies! And this year we have two selling. Help them meet their cookies sales goals by ordering online.

If you live nearby, choose girl delivery and help get cookie boxes out of our garage... Otherwise we're going to be giving them Girl Scout Cookies for birthday and Christmas presents all year.

Bus stop selfie with Nora. This week she moved from her tiny charter school with only 18 eighth graders to the public middle school with over 200. And now she rides the bus.

The charter school wasn't challenging her enough, has a huge percentage of students who are disruptive in the classroom, and has been having trouble keeping teachers. Last year she loved it. But this year it was one thing after another, so right before Thanksgiving she and I went to go tour our neighborhood middle school, and she immediately wanted to make the switch.

We've never had a kid in public school and I was nervous about how the transition would go from such a small school to a big one, but so far she's loving it and is glad she decided to move schools. It helps that she knows kids there already from her dance team. Hopefully she'll still be happy when she starts getting homework. Coming from a no homework school that may be a shock to us all.

Halloween 2022. Two witches, a murderous cat, and a creepy Victorian doll.

Zara's costume was my favorite this year - Nora did her makeup and she wore my flower girl dress from my mom and step-dad's wedding. She might have worn it better. 😂
