Finds of the Past Few Weeks:

  • 22 Candid Photos That Show How Beautiful Breastfeeding Really Is, Huffington Post — I know everyone has probably seen this already, but I love it
  • The American Dream Does Not Cost $130,000/year, Becoming Minimalist — “The notion that a family of four must own a $275K home, drive an SUV, spend $5K on summer vacation, and eat $315 worth of food every week is foolishness. The presumption that security and fulfillment and happiness can only be found in the ownership of these luxuries is a shameful misrepresentation of our heart’s greatest desires.”
  • How a Young Couple Transformed an Empty Suburban Lot Into a Fantastical Food Oasis, Take Part  — Inspirational.  I think next year we need to grow more of our own food.
  • Intelligent People All Have One Thing In Common: They Stay Up Later Than You, Elite Daily — This is what I am going to keep telling myself at 3 a.m.
  • Preserving the Harvest: canning recipe round-up, Clean — I haven’t done any canning yet this year, but this round up looks great for when I manage to get down to business.
  • Safety of Vaccines Used for Routine Immunization of US Children: A Systematic Review, Pediatrics — Important read for all parents!  We just started vaccinating Nora (probably I ought to write an updated post on this) and are taking them slowly one at a time.  There is evidence that some vaccines are associated with serious adverse effects; whether you choose to vaccinate on schedule or not, this is important information of which to be aware.
  • Teaching 4-Year-Olds To Feel Better, NPR — “You’re 4 years old, building a block tower. Another kid runs up and knocks it down. What do you do? A) Tell her that’s against the rules. B) Go tell a teacher. C) Hit her. D) Start to cry. E) What did you say again?”
  • Throwback Thursday, NY Times — An Op-Ed that will make you giggle.
  • Yoga in India vs. Yoga in America, Seattle Yoga News — An interesting look at the differences in practice in India and here, written by an Indian.

It's that time again... Girl Scout cookies! And this year we have two selling. Help them meet their cookies sales goals by ordering online.

If you live nearby, choose girl delivery and help get cookie boxes out of our garage... Otherwise we're going to be giving them Girl Scout Cookies for birthday and Christmas presents all year.

Bus stop selfie with Nora. This week she moved from her tiny charter school with only 18 eighth graders to the public middle school with over 200. And now she rides the bus.

The charter school wasn't challenging her enough, has a huge percentage of students who are disruptive in the classroom, and has been having trouble keeping teachers. Last year she loved it. But this year it was one thing after another, so right before Thanksgiving she and I went to go tour our neighborhood middle school, and she immediately wanted to make the switch.

We've never had a kid in public school and I was nervous about how the transition would go from such a small school to a big one, but so far she's loving it and is glad she decided to move schools. It helps that she knows kids there already from her dance team. Hopefully she'll still be happy when she starts getting homework. Coming from a no homework school that may be a shock to us all.

Halloween 2022. Two witches, a murderous cat, and a creepy Victorian doll.

Zara's costume was my favorite this year - Nora did her makeup and she wore my flower girl dress from my mom and step-dad's wedding. She might have worn it better. 😂
