Saturday Surfing

Finds of the Week:

  • The Bitter and the Sweet, Whoopsy Vaisey — I love this oh-so-true description of “Motherhood Bipolar Disorder” who we long for them to grow up and stay small all at the same time.
  • Dad quits breast milk diet, donates stash to quadruplets, The Toronto Star — Quick end to what was a very controversial story.  A Dad was drinking (and blogging about drinking) his wife’s thousands of ounces of expressed breast milk so it wouldn’t go bad (sort of weird if you ask me).  Four days in, they took down the blog because of negative comments.  Luckily, they were able to find a mom in need to take the milk.
  • How this Pumpkin Got to 1,500 Lbs!, Fooducate — Really cool time-lapse video of a pumpkin growing.
  • Soaring Poverty Casts Spotlight on ‘Lost Decade’, NY Times — Census numbers show new signs of distress among the middle class, as median incomes fell last year to levels last seen in 1997.  This is us.
In lieu of some Etsy Love, this week I want to invite you to surf over to The Brotherhood of Thieves website…because I built it! Originally, their site looked like this:
And now, it looks like this:
It has large flash galleries with photos of the restaurant and delicious food, online forms for customer feedback, planning a private party, and an employment application.  I set up a blog for them, as well as a flickr account and set up a social media marketing strategy.
I had a ton of fun…and now you know why there were no blog posts the last two days.  Go check it out and come back and let me know what you think!

Amber, The website looks great!!!! You are very talented–I’m sure you know in today’s market, it’s good to have those website building skills. Go girl!! I was unable to call up some of the photos–could be my computer. My husband is presently working in Boston, though we live on the Chesapeake Bay next to Annapolis. I’m planning on visiting hubby soon for the leaf color changing, but how far is Nantucket from Boston? I’d love to visit the Brotherhood. Yummy seafood! My favorite are fried oysters when in season! Have a great Octoberfest!

Hi Donna, I’m glad you like the site! Hopefully I’ll get feed back from others about the pictures. On visiting Nantucket, it depends on how you get here. It’s only a 30 minute or so plane ride from Bosoton, but pretty pricey. Otherwise you can drive or ride a bus (40mins to and hour+ depending upon traffic and where you are) and then take a ferry (1 or 2 hours).

It's that time again... Girl Scout cookies! And this year we have two selling. Help them meet their cookies sales goals by ordering online.

If you live nearby, choose girl delivery and help get cookie boxes out of our garage... Otherwise we're going to be giving them Girl Scout Cookies for birthday and Christmas presents all year.

Bus stop selfie with Nora. This week she moved from her tiny charter school with only 18 eighth graders to the public middle school with over 200. And now she rides the bus.

The charter school wasn't challenging her enough, has a huge percentage of students who are disruptive in the classroom, and has been having trouble keeping teachers. Last year she loved it. But this year it was one thing after another, so right before Thanksgiving she and I went to go tour our neighborhood middle school, and she immediately wanted to make the switch.

We've never had a kid in public school and I was nervous about how the transition would go from such a small school to a big one, but so far she's loving it and is glad she decided to move schools. It helps that she knows kids there already from her dance team. Hopefully she'll still be happy when she starts getting homework. Coming from a no homework school that may be a shock to us all.

Halloween 2022. Two witches, a murderous cat, and a creepy Victorian doll.

Zara's costume was my favorite this year - Nora did her makeup and she wore my flower girl dress from my mom and step-dad's wedding. She might have worn it better. 😂
