Saturday Surfing

Finds of the week:

  • 37 or so ingredients, Dwight Eschliman – a photography project of all of the ingredients in a twinkie.  The photographer says, “It’s the product of a kid that was raised to be suspicious of foods that weren’t assmbled in mom’s kitchen, and bordering on obsessive compulsive. The Twinkie is made up of 37 or so ingredients and this is what they look like.”
  • Birth: U.S. home births increase 20% from 2004 to 2008, Booster Shots Health Blog, Los Angeles Times
  • Children’s earliest memories shift as they get older, study finds, Los Angeles Times and a follow-up, Why the First Years are So Important, Even Though Our Kids Remember Nothing on babble
  • ‘Go The [Expletive] To Sleep’: A Salvo For Tired Parents, NPR – news story about a book, based on something we’ve all experienced: “It’s 10 at night, you’ve read Good Night Moon six times, and rocked your dear child for two hours. And, still, when you dare to look down at their angelic face, their eyes are still open.”  Yes, I’m here to say even attachment parent can get frustrated at nighttime (does “toddler bed” ring a bell?) and this book is hilarious.
  • Helping Kids Beat Depression… by Treating Mom, Wall Street Journal – Treating moms for depression has a significant impact on the mental health of their children, according to a new study. Kelsey Hubbard talks with WSJ’s Melinda Beck about the findings showing children get better along with their mother’s successful treatment of the disease.
  • Parents keep child’s gender secret, Parentcentral.ca – Couple raises their two boys to be gender neutral and chose for their newborn to remain genderless until (s)he decides to disclose gender for him/herself.  Interesting food for thought, but I’m not sure that I agree even a tiny bit.
  • Why is America the ‘no-vacation nation’?, CNN – Short answer? Capitalism and the Corporation.

It's that time again... Girl Scout cookies! And this year we have two selling. Help them meet their cookies sales goals by ordering online.

If you live nearby, choose girl delivery and help get cookie boxes out of our garage... Otherwise we're going to be giving them Girl Scout Cookies for birthday and Christmas presents all year.

Bus stop selfie with Nora. This week she moved from her tiny charter school with only 18 eighth graders to the public middle school with over 200. And now she rides the bus.

The charter school wasn't challenging her enough, has a huge percentage of students who are disruptive in the classroom, and has been having trouble keeping teachers. Last year she loved it. But this year it was one thing after another, so right before Thanksgiving she and I went to go tour our neighborhood middle school, and she immediately wanted to make the switch.

We've never had a kid in public school and I was nervous about how the transition would go from such a small school to a big one, but so far she's loving it and is glad she decided to move schools. It helps that she knows kids there already from her dance team. Hopefully she'll still be happy when she starts getting homework. Coming from a no homework school that may be a shock to us all.

Halloween 2022. Two witches, a murderous cat, and a creepy Victorian doll.

Zara's costume was my favorite this year - Nora did her makeup and she wore my flower girl dress from my mom and step-dad's wedding. She might have worn it better. 😂
