And It Begins

What, I have a blog?  And I’m supposed to be writing updates about our life on it?  Oh, yeah.

I can’t believe how things have been getting away from me the past few weeks.  I feel like I’ve been working around the clock, with Nora, babysitting, keeping house, and doing computer work at night.  And, I know the tourist season has started on Nantucket, because we see more of Chris in chef whites than not.Summer is nearly here, but the summer crew doesn’t arrive until next week, so Chris has been working double-time these past few weeks.  He had a lot of fun designing the new menu with all sorts of delicious and amazing things, but running a big summer menu with winter’s skeleton crew means working from 9:30 or 10 am most days, until 10:30 or 11 at night.  The last two weeks, he also has gone in for the morning on [what’s supposed to be] his day off.    It’s been hard on all of us.  I have to pick up more of the household work than usual, Chris is understandably exhausted when he makes it home, and Nora missed her Dada big time.  Luckily, the Brotherhood is extremely family friendly, so we try to pop in most afternoons for a short hello and stay for a quick family dinner once per week on a slow day. It’s fun to see Chris at work, in a completely different setting and mindset than I normally see him, and Nora basically thinks she owns the place.  She also likes to do really important things like taste-testing new foods (me too!) and making sure the patio chairs are still comfortable after a winter in storage. But, as nice as it is to visit, we’re really looking forward to mid May when he’ll have the new crew up to speed and be able to spend more mornings home with us.  In the meantime, we get through the tough weeks by always reminding each other how incredibly lucky we are to live in this amazing place and for me to be able to be home with Nora.  …oh, and the free take-out isn’t bad when I’m having a rough Friday and really just need a picnic in the park to boost my energy.

It’s good, but probably not after being mailed; I think you, Matt, and Aria will just have to come get some!

It's that time again... Girl Scout cookies! And this year we have two selling. Help them meet their cookies sales goals by ordering online.

If you live nearby, choose girl delivery and help get cookie boxes out of our garage... Otherwise we're going to be giving them Girl Scout Cookies for birthday and Christmas presents all year.

Bus stop selfie with Nora. This week she moved from her tiny charter school with only 18 eighth graders to the public middle school with over 200. And now she rides the bus.

The charter school wasn't challenging her enough, has a huge percentage of students who are disruptive in the classroom, and has been having trouble keeping teachers. Last year she loved it. But this year it was one thing after another, so right before Thanksgiving she and I went to go tour our neighborhood middle school, and she immediately wanted to make the switch.

We've never had a kid in public school and I was nervous about how the transition would go from such a small school to a big one, but so far she's loving it and is glad she decided to move schools. It helps that she knows kids there already from her dance team. Hopefully she'll still be happy when she starts getting homework. Coming from a no homework school that may be a shock to us all.

Halloween 2022. Two witches, a murderous cat, and a creepy Victorian doll.

Zara's costume was my favorite this year - Nora did her makeup and she wore my flower girl dress from my mom and step-dad's wedding. She might have worn it better. 😂
