Back to Work (A Little)

We’re in the land of mega-chains and drive-throughs!  (A.K.A. the rest of the United States outside of Nantucket.)

Saturday morning, we were on the first ferry off the island at 6:30 am.  After an adrenaline filled morning of, “oh my gosh it’s 10 to six, we have to go!”, we had a leisurely 2 hour ride to Hyannis walking around the boat with a teddy bear and stopping to say “dagda” every time we saw a dog.  Or, at least somebody did.

Then, we drove 6 hours to Burlington, Vermont, only stopping twice:

once for play (and a little business for me) at Mothers and Company in West Boylston, MA and once for the closest we could get to a “meal” on the road.

(Yellow Mac’n’Cheese makes me want to gag, but you do what you can…)

We managed to make it to Burlington around 4:45 PM with minimal screaming (thank goodness) and a lot of sleeping.

And then, we spent some time with our Mim, discovering things like remote controls

(which she thought was a cell phone),

shopping,

and car rides with Garfield,

before I had to leave Nora to go do the work that brought us to Burlington.  It makes sense that while living this week in the land of corporate everything, I’ll be away from her from 7:30-5:30 all week.  It’s so hard (mostly for me, she’s having fun with Mim), but I just have to keep telling myself it’ll be worth it.  And it will, but it still didn’t erase the pang of sadness I felt walking out the door this morning, as if I had never done it before…and it does nothing to help the slight paranoia that she might wean this week.  I’m so not ready for that.

Love the Garfield photo! Enjoy yourself while you can. It’s nice to have a built in sitter while you are at class. No worries and you can spend sometime for yourself with other adults. There will be plenty of time back home with just you and Nora. Love, Mom

Glad the drive went well. You pumping at work? Mim not feeding her for an hr or so before you get home? She’ll probably nurse a ton as soon as you walk through the door. Hope the week goes well for you. We start our 2 day road trip on thursday!

I am pumping, but only once. I know I should do more but I just don’t want to. I didn’t mind it before, but now it feel like such a hassle. She’s nursing some, but not much. Mim brought her for lunch yesterday and she only nursed for about 4 minutes!

It's that time again... Girl Scout cookies! And this year we have two selling. Help them meet their cookies sales goals by ordering online.

If you live nearby, choose girl delivery and help get cookie boxes out of our garage... Otherwise we're going to be giving them Girl Scout Cookies for birthday and Christmas presents all year.

Bus stop selfie with Nora. This week she moved from her tiny charter school with only 18 eighth graders to the public middle school with over 200. And now she rides the bus.

The charter school wasn't challenging her enough, has a huge percentage of students who are disruptive in the classroom, and has been having trouble keeping teachers. Last year she loved it. But this year it was one thing after another, so right before Thanksgiving she and I went to go tour our neighborhood middle school, and she immediately wanted to make the switch.

We've never had a kid in public school and I was nervous about how the transition would go from such a small school to a big one, but so far she's loving it and is glad she decided to move schools. It helps that she knows kids there already from her dance team. Hopefully she'll still be happy when she starts getting homework. Coming from a no homework school that may be a shock to us all.

Halloween 2022. Two witches, a murderous cat, and a creepy Victorian doll.

Zara's costume was my favorite this year - Nora did her makeup and she wore my flower girl dress from my mom and step-dad's wedding. She might have worn it better. 😂
