Some Old Things I Bookmarked…(has it really been nearly a month since my last Saturday Surfing post?):
- Dear Mr. Akin, I Want You to Imagine…, Huffington Post — Eve Ensler’s response to Todd Akin’s comments about legitimate rape.
- An Immune Disorder at the Root of Autism, The New York Times — At least a subset of autism — perhaps one-third, and very likely more — looks like a type of inflammatory disease. And it begins in the womb. Really interesting look at how the prenatal experience can impact the fetus.
- Study Reveals The Geography of Charitable Giving, NPR — New study by the Chronicle of Philanthropy, which breaks charitable giving down by ZIP code. It found that generosity varies greatly from one region of the country to another.
- I Wish My Mother Had Aborted Me, Role/Reboot — Lynn Beisner explains the difference between the two phrases “The best choice for both my mother and me would have been abortion” and “I wish I had never been born.”
- What if we regulated junk food the way we do alcohol?, Los Angeles Times — Food, food, everywhere, much of it junk. Perhaps we should control it the same way we do alcohol, two scientists say. I love this idea.
- Why I Don’t Buy Made in China for My Baby as a Beijing Expat, InCulture Parent — Essay from a mom living in China about the quality of baby products available there and the differences in attitudes about child rearing.
- Young and Homeless, The New York Times — Poignant photo essay of homeless teens and children.
