I know I said I didn’t want to spoil surprises, but I have to let the cat out of the bag on this hot cocoa mix, because it’s super cute and super easy — perfect if you’re still looking for a little something to make for someone. I love the way layered gift jars look, and when I came across this recipe for cocoa mix with espresso in it, I knew that I had to make some. I made them in pint jars, which is approximately 6 servings. Add a fabric scrap over the lid and a little tag with the preparation directions, and it’s the perfect gift!
The recipe below will make 12 pints, each with 6 servings of cocoa mix.
Ingredients:
- 6 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
- 6 cups granulated sugar
- 3 cups instant espresso
- 6 cups powdered milk
- 3 teaspoons salt
- 3 cups bittersweet chocolate chips, chopped or lightly pulsed in food processor
In each jar, layer 1/2 cup cocoa powder, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup instant espresso, 1/2 cup powdered milk, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 cup chopped chocolate chips, making sure to level each layer before adding the next.
Create tags to attach to each jar with the following directions: “Mix contents in a large bowl. For each serving, place 1/3 cup cocoa mix in a mug and stir in 1 cup boiling water. Store remaining mix in airtight container.”
